How To Keep Fit in The Winter!

Winter is fast upon us and the cold is already here, but now is not the time to give up on your fitness. Fitness (not specifically weight loss) is something we should work on and maintain all year round, whether you get your exercise in by visiting the gym, jogging around the river, or through after work yoga classes, you shouldn’t let winter and it’s less-than-satisfactory weather deter your commitment to yourself.

The best way to maintain your current level of fitness (or to improve it!) during the winter months is to adjust your regime to suit your comfort level. Some of us are happy to slug out out in the rain (this author is definitely one of those people) or after the sun has gone down, but others may not be so inclined! If you’re one who prefers to avoid the wet or the dark, adjust your weekly routine appropriately, swap your evening jog to a lunchtime session or move your exercise indoors to your local gym.

One of the benefits with yoga is that apart from a few select cases (see: Engineers Without Borders Fundraiser Yoga) it’s normally an indoor activity and usually comes with heating! So don’t let the weather, the temperature, and the sunset get in the way of your health.

I’ve included some great tips I use to continually motivate myself, and others, during the winter months below, hopefully you can find some use out of them!

1. Prepare Beforehand!

Often the hardest part with exercising in the winter, particularly early morning, is dragging yourself out of bed. The warmth, the cushioning, that comfy snuggly feeling; it’s often hard to overcome especially when you know you’ve got to rummage around collecting everything before you go running/to class/to the gym.

Pack your kit the night before. Put your mat in the boot of your car, get your clothes and shoes and put them right next to your bed, have your water bottle filled-chilled-and ready to go! You want to make exercising as easy as possible for yourself, so do as much of it as you can the night before.

2. Team Up!

3. Try Something Different

Winter is the perfect time to mix it up. Maybe your existing regime has done its job or you’re just getting tired of not being able to find a parking spot at your local gym; whatever the reason, winter is a great time to try something new and expand your horizons.

Ever been rock climbing? Have you tried out calisthenics? What about spending an hour whacking away at a driving range? Mix it up, try it out, and get out there.
